GSK Project

This study is being done to try and find out more about psychotic illness, and the changes that might be seen on psychological testing and on brain scans both in people that have had an episode of illness, their relatives who have not had a psychotic illness and healthy controls. Participants in the study have both a session of psychological tests and a brain scan (MRI scan).

The psychological test session will take place at the Addenbrooke’s Centre for Clinical Investigation at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. When participants come for this session they are asked to give a urine sample to test for drugs, and a breath test to check for alcohol. They are then asked to perform some tasks using a computer screen, as well as some paper and pen tasks, looking at different aspects of brain function, like concentration, emotions and memory. Participants don't need to have any knowledge of the tasks beforehand. This session will last about 3 hours, and there will be breaks for rest and refreshment if required.

At this session a blood sample will also be taken. This blood sample will be used in the future to look for genes and chemical markers that may help us find out why some people develop psychotic illness. The blood samples will not have the participant's name on and will not be linked to the participant individually.

The MRI scan will be on the same day as the psychological testing. It will either be at the Radiology Department or at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The MRI scan will take detailed pictures of participants' brains, and they will be asked to perform some tasks while in the scanner, using a screen and response box. The scanner is able to measure which parts of your brain are active when you are performing the tasks (functional MRI). This scan will take about an hour and a half.
