Biomarkers

Can Biomarkers help us to better understand psychosis and target its treatment?

What are Biomarkers?

Biomarkers are the biological measurements that are associated with the progression of a disease. We are intersted in the following biomarkers: Genes, metabolites and immune system markers.

Genes

Psychosis is a heritable disease. Several genes have been shown to have an interaction with psychosis.

Metabolites

Psychotic disorders involve metabolic changes as part of the disease process. Some of these changes have been found in the white matter of the brain.

Immune system

Autoimmune diseases are associated to a higher risk of psychosis.

What is this study about?

This study aims to assess the contribution of specific biomarkers to the risk of psychosis. We are interested in looking at genes to find which, among all the candidates, are involved in symptoms of the disease. We will also use metabolomics and immunologic techniques to investigate whether specific metabolites and/or antibodies could be a signature for the onset of psychosis. Our objective is to identify a biomarker that predicts which individuals at high risk of psychosis will develop psychotic disorders. If a biomarker can be identified, this may have implications for the understanding of the pathophysiology of psychosis and may help in the search of new treatments.

What will my participation involve?

People willing to take part in the study will attend one session of 1 hour. They will be asked to fill in some questionnaires, give physical and physiological measures, as well as a small blood sample.

Volunteers will be rewarded £20 for their participation.

How to participate?

Is eligible for this study anyone who meet the criteria to enter in the CAMEO service. A letter asking for a physical health assessment clinic and research will be sent to you. All you have to do is to confirm your appointment.
