Food bank scheme wins quality award
06 April 2016

A scheme set up to provide emergency food supplies to mental health patients when they leave hospital has been recognised with an award.

Charlie Renforth, a student nurse with the Cambridge Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Service (CRHTT), recently won a Quality Heroes Award run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) after setting up a food bank. The awards recognise CPFT staff who go above and beyond what is normally expected.

Charlie explained: “We provide vouchers for established food banks in Cambridge, but these usually open at certain times on weekdays, whereas our patients sometimes need urgent supplies when they are discharged in the evening or at the weekend.

“If they’ve been in hospital for a while they may not have any food at home and are sometimes struggling financially. That’s when I came up with the idea of organising our own food bank so that they can be given a helping hand.”

Ali Shippey, Community Mental Health Nurse, who nominated Charlie for the award, said: “It’s great that Charlie’s efforts have been recognised and the feedback from patients has been really positive because it’s not something they expect us to do. The food bank helps us to discharge patients sooner because it tides them over while they adapt to being back home and they’re more likely cope better.”

Charlie relies on staff donations to stock the food bank, and has even purchased these herself on occasion, but the team also accepts donations to top up supplies. To donate please contact Charlie Renforth on 01223 218810 or email charlene.renforth@cpft.nhs.uk

CRHTT is a 24/7 community based team based at Fulbourn Hospital, Cambridge, which provides assessment and intensive home treatment for people experiencing a mental health crisis.
